Central University of Punjab Celebrates World Disability Day, 2025 with a Call for Inclusion
Bathinda 4 December ( PDL ) : The Department of Education, Central University of Punjab, marked World Disability Day 2025 with great enthusiasm and commitment towards fostering an inclusive society. This year’s global theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” formed the core of the department’s celebrations. The event was organized under the esteemed patronage of Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, who has consistently encouraged initiatives promoting equity, accessibility, and social justice on campus. Under the direction and guidance of Dr. Shankar Lal Bika, Professor, Department of Education, the students of the Department presented a powerful nukkad natak (street play) titled “Meri Chhamta Meri Pehchaan - Know me for my abilities, not my disability.” The play highlighted the everyday challenges faced by persons with disabilities and emphasized the importance of recognizing individuals for their strengths, talents, and aspirations rather than their limitations, especially by the parents, teachers and peer group. The emotionally engaging performance by M.A. and M.Ed. 2nd year students received appreciation for its sensitivity and social message. As a special part of the celebration, Dr. Jaswinder Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Education, addressed the students and faculty. He shared his inspiring personal journey and achievements despite physical challenges, motivating everyone to adopt resilience and a positive mindset. The programme was coordinated by the faculty members of the Department of Education under the guidance of Prof. Shankar Lal Bika, reaffirming its ongoing commitment to inclusive education, community engagement, and sensitization towards the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. The event concluded with a collective call to action, urging the university community to continue creating accessible and enabling spaces where every individual, irrespective of disability, can thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
