Mela buffs upbeat as they go on shopping spree on day 6

Chandigarh 3 December ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The ongoing 15th Chandigarh National Crafts Mela, jointly organised by the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC) and the UT Administration, witnessed a sharp surge in the footfalls as it enters the 6th day, today.The Mela, which is a melting pot of cultures, offers a space for the fledgling artists and artisans drawn from various parts of the country to showcase their skill to a larger audience. The day stage performances included prominent folk dances of various states Chakri (Raj), Sammi (Pb), Dhamali (J&K) Dhangiri Gaja (Maha), which evoked a huge round of applause from the audience.The dances featured in the evening segment included Bihu (Assam), Rouf (J&K) and Bhangra (Pb). It was now the turn of Murli Rajasthani, an acclaimed folk singer of Rajasthan, to hop on to the stage.He wowed the audience with his power-packed programme of folk sings, bringing alive the rich culture of Rajasthan, which evoked an overwhelming response from one and all.This was followed by an engaging theatrical presentation of 'Nakkal' by Goni Khan and party, which was well received. The ground performances of the day included Kachi Ghori (Raj), ‘Nachar’ and Bazigar party (Pb), and ‘Been-Jogi’ and ‘Nagada’ from Haryana, which turned out to be a wow moment for Mela freaks. Foodies, who had a fare of traditional cuisines from various regions, to choose from.The hot favourite for the young and the old was the traditional Rajasthani dal bati churma, and so was the Gujarati sev poori. Litti chokha from Purvanchal, makki-ki-roti and saag from Punjab and Siddu from Himachal Pradesh among others, which attracted foodies to savour the sumptuous treats to their heart's fill. For the sweet tooth, ‘Jalebi’, and garam ‘Gulab-jamun’, moong dal halwa were the obvious choices to satiate their cravings. A steady stream of buyers continued through the day, opting for handicraft items, like artificial jewelry, designer crockery, wooden furniture, woolen shawls, stols and mufflers, sweaters, jackets and hand-knit Himachali caps available. A range of sarees, suits, were in great demand. The star performer of the evening was Vidhi Deshwal, a singing sensation from Haryana, who brought the united flavours of Haryana. She doled out some of her hit numbers in chaste Haryanavi, including “Mein sasriye na jaun meri maa, mera mann lagya faqiri mein…”, “Manne Raj Bhavan mein jaa len diyo, do baat karunga Krishan tai…", "He ri lugayiyo chaala hogya, meri jaan ka gala hogya…”, "Tel chameli chandan sabun chahe lagga lo scent Jagat mein koi na permanent ..." among others. Before Nidhi took to the centre stage, prominent Ragini singer Rakesh Bharania kick-started the Haryanavi Nite, doling out some of his popular ragini numbers. Prominent folk singer Rakesh Khanwal will perform on December 4 evening. The annual fair to continue till December 7
