Max Hospital Mohali highlights rising cases of childhood cancer, stresses early detection, prevention
Chandigarh 9 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Every year, September is observed as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. To highlight the rising cases of childhood cancer in India and emphasise the importance of early detection and prevention, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, raises awareness about this growing concern. Once considered rare, cases of childhood cancer are now steadily on the rise. Unlike adult cancer, which are often linked to lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, or unhealthy diets, cancer in children is more commonly associated with genetic predispositions like maternal health during pregnancy and environmental exposures, including pollution, toxins, etc. Dr. Krutika Goel, Associate Consultant - Paediatric Oncology, Max Hospital, Mohali, said, “Cancer is essentially a genetic disease, but the risk of developing it is shaped by the environment we live in. For children, this risk may begin even before birth—through a mother’s diet, her exposure to harmful chemicals, or even passive smoking during pregnancy.” She further added that, “Preventive steps can make a meaningful difference. Expectant mothers should adopt healthy nutrition, avoid alcohol, smoking, processed foods, and ensure adequate intake of prenatal vitamins. For children, reducing exposure to pesticides, air pollution, and unnecessary radiation, along with encouraging physical activity and limiting screen time, can help lower long-term risk. Teenagers, meanwhile, must be educated on safe practices, the dangers of smoking, and the importance of vaccinations such as HPV and Hepatitis B, which can prevent certain cancer.” “Despite preventive measures, it is important to remember that many childhood cancer do not have a clear cause. This makes early recognition and timely medical attention critical. Parents should stay vigilant to unusual symptoms like persistent fever, frequent infections, unexplained weight loss, swelling or lumps, easy bruising, changes in vision, or prolonged bone and joint pain. Early diagnosis can significantly improve treatment outcomes as well,” Dr. Goel emphasized. Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, remains committed to raising awareness about paediatric cancer and providing advanced treatment and compassionate care to affected families.
