Bhagwant Mann government pushing Punjab into a dangerous debt trap : Tarun Chugh
Rs. 1.5 lakh crore borrowed in four years, yet not a single major development project in Punjab : Chugh
Kejriwal promised Rs. 20,000 crore annual mining revenue; Punjab got barely Rs. 800 crore in four years and AAP MP Malvinder Kang exposed mining corruption : Chugh
Chandigarh 5 March ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh said that the Bhagwant Mann government is continuously pushing Punjab towards a serious financial crisis by taking loan after loan. Chugh said that over the past few years Punjab’s debt has rapidly increased to more than Rs. 4 lakh crore. He added that reports indicate the state government is once again preparing to take a substantial loan just ahead of the budget, which will further weaken Punjab’s financial condition and may push the state’s total debt beyond Rs. 5 lakh crore.
Chugh said that despite taking such massive loans, there is no visible development on the ground in Punjab. No major dam has been constructed, no major bridge has been built, no new industrial units have been established and no meaningful transformation has taken place in the agricultural sector. He said these loans are not being used for development but merely to cover up the failures of the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government. Chugh added that instead of developing Punjab’s resources or creating new revenue streams, the AAP government is running the state entirely on borrowed money.
Speaking on the mining issue, Chugh said the Aam Aadmi Party had promised in its manifesto that strict action against illegal mining would generate thousands of crores of rupees in revenue for Punjab. However, the reality today is that serious allegations of illegal mining continue to surface regularly. Chugh said that a letter written by a government SDO along with several public statements has raised serious questions about how illegal mining and corruption networks are operating in Punjab. He said it is deeply disturbing that those who once claimed to represent “radical honesty” have turned out to be radically dishonest.
Chugh said that during the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, Arvind Kejriwal had promised that Punjab would generate Rs. 20,000 crore annually from the mining sector once AAP formed the government. However, the ground reality has been drastically different. Over the past four years, Punjab has reportedly received barely around Rs. 800 crore from mining, which is nearly 100 times less than what was promised to the people of Punjab. Chugh further said that the situation becomes even more alarming because allegations of corruption in the mining department are now emerging from within the ruling party itself. He pointed out that AAP’s own Member of Parliament Malvinder Kang has raised serious concerns about rampant corruption in Punjab’s mining department, yet the Bhagwant Mann government has failed to take any concrete action so far.
Chugh alleged that Punjab’s resources are being openly exploited and that the Mann government has no clear vision for rebuilding the state’s economy. He said Punjab’s money is being spent not on development but on advertisements and on hosting Kejriwal’s political entourage. Chugh said the hardworking people of Punjab are now asking a simple question: if the Mann government is continuously taking loans, where exactly is that money being spent? Chugh said the people of Punjab now understand the reality behind the claims of “Kattar Imandari.” He said rising debt, declining revenue and the exploitation of state resources clearly show that the government lacks both a clear policy direction and administrative capability. Chugh added that the people of Punjab will certainly demand answers to these questions.
