Dialysis not always permanent, early expert care can make reversal possible : Dr. Amninder Kaur

Nawanshahr 3 Marech ( PDL ) : “In kidney failure cases, dialysis is not always a lifelong treatment. With timely diagnosis and expert intervention, dialysis in certain cases can be temporary and even discontinued once kidney function improves.” Dr. Amninder Kaur, consultant–nephrology, explained that dialysis serves as an artificial support system when the kidneys are unable to remove toxins and excess fluids from the body. However, its duration depends entirely on the underlying cause of kidney failure.

“In cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by severe infections, dehydration, medications, or critical illness, kidney function can recover with proper medical management. Dialysis in such situations is often temporary and can be stopped once the kidneys regain adequate function,” said Dr. Kaur.

She further clarified that long-term or permanent dialysis is generally required in advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), commonly resulting from prolonged diabetes or uncontrolled hypertension, where kidney damage is irreversible.
