Majithia targets AAP government over rising debt on Punjab
Chandigarh 5 February ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Thursday targeted the Aam Aadmi Party government over the issue of mounting debt on Punjab. Sharing details related to the debt burden on Punjab through his social media accounts, Majithia wrote that after the independence of the country, different governments formed in Punjab had taken a total loan of Rs 2,81,773 crore till the financial year 2021 to 22. With this borrowing, governments from time to time created the basic infrastructure of the state. He said that between 2007 and 2017, under the leadership of the late chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and with the far sighted vision of Sukhbir Singh Badal, the basic infrastructure of Punjab was established, which people of the state still remember. Majithia said that by March 2026 this debt is going to increase to around Rs 4,17,136 crore because the Bhagwant Mann government has taken nearly Rs 1,35,363 crore loan in just four years. He added that more borrowing will also be taken in the financial year 2025 to 26 and the total debt may reach nearly Rs 5 lakh crore.
He alleged that despite this borrowing, no kind of progress has been made in the basic infrastructure of Punjab. Raising questions over the debt, Majithia said that overall it can be said that the Bhagwant Mann government is “0 plus 0 equals 0”. He said that in the past four years Punjabis have been shown nothing except “dreams like Mungerilal”. According to him, a major part of the loans taken by the Bhagwant Mann government has been spent on “aircraft rides and false advertisements”. Majithia further said that before forming the government, Bhagwant Mann and his Delhi based leader Arvind Kejriwal had claimed that the state would get Rs 20,000 crore every year from mining revenue. He asked them to explain where the Rs 80,000 crore from the last four years has gone. He also said that both leaders had earlier alleged that Punjab’s revenue was being looted through corruption and had promised that by stopping such leakages the state would get Rs 34,000 crore every year. Majithia asked where that money has gone.
Appealing to the people of Punjab, Majithia said that when Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann come to seek votes, people must ask them why the hard earned money of Punjabis is being wasted in unnecessary expenditure while the chief minister remains silent on what he termed as “open loot”. During the same interaction, Majithia also asked the chief minister to clarify what happened in the matter related to the bus bodies of vehicles linked to Punjab Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. He said that for four years the chief minister kept threatening to open that case but the file has now disappeared and the government should explain through whom a compromise was reached. Apart from this, Majithia also raised serious questions over the continuously deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab.
