City based 22nd Century Technologies acquires BT Federal, Launches 22nd Century Networks
Chandigarh 16 February ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : From leading the National Informatics Centre, Chandigarh to the highest levels of US, the Chandigarh-rooted global IT firm 22nd Century Technologies has acquired BT Federal, the U.S. Govt contracting subsidiary of BT Group. With this strategic move, BT Federal will now operate as 22nd Century Networks, further strengthening support for federal missions with trusted connectivity.
For the Chandigarh–Mohali region, the announcement carries special significance. The company’s CEO, Anil Sharma, an alumnus of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology represents a story deeply connected to the soil of Chandigarh. The acquisition brings together BT Federal’s experience in providing telecom and networking services to U.S. government agencies with 22nd Century Technologies’ expertise in IT upgrades, cybersecurity, and mission support. Together, under the new name 22nd Century Networks, the company will offer secure and reliable network systems that U.S. federal agencies can trust and depend on for their daily operations.Born into a humble family and raised among six siblings, Mr. Sharma’s early life was shaped by shared responsibility. From modest beginnings to leading a landmark U.S. acquisition, his journey reflects the aspirations of countless families across the region who believe in education, hard work, and global ambition.
Anil Sharma’s professional journey began in public service. He served for eight years (1989–1997) with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Government of India as District Informatics Officer and Systems Analyst. As the first District Informatics Officer of Chandigarh, he established the NIC district office and played a pioneering role in introducing IT systems within government departments. His consultancy support to various departments in Punjab and Chandigarh contributed significantly to the early foundations of e-Governance in the region.
Speaking about the larger vision, Sharma said that the growth of 22nd Century Technologies is not just a corporate achievement but also an opportunity to inspire and strengthen the Chandigarh–Mohali IT ecosystem. He emphasized that globally competitive companies emerging from the region can attract investment, generate high-value employment and position Chandigarh and Mohali as credible technology hubs on the international map.
