Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee gets major political boost as Aam Aadmi Party councilor joins
Chandigarh 22 March ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee received a major political boost today when Damanpreet Singh Badal, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Councilor for Ward No. 17 (Sectors 22 and 23), joined the Congress party along with hundreds of his supporters. During an event held at the Rajiv Gandhi Congress Bhawan in Sector-35, he formally announced his induction into the Congress under the leadership of the Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee President, Shri Harmohinder Singh Lucky. On this occasion, Ujjwal Bhasin—the former State General Secretary of the Aam Aadmi Party and currently the Treasurer of the District Bar Association, Sector-43—along with advocates Vishal Sharma and Yuvraj Asht, also joined the Congress party, thereby further strengthening the organization.
Welcoming the new members, State Congress President H.S. Lucky stated that the induction of grassroots-level and influential leaders like Damanpreet Singh Badal and Ujjwal Bhasin would infuse the organization with fresh energy and strength. He expressed confidence that, in the near future, many other leaders from various political parties would also join the Congress, inspired by the party's policies, ideology, and the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.
Lucky remarked that the forceful manner in which Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari has raised the city's pressing issues in Parliament—combined with the grassroots-level work being undertaken by the Congress party—has successfully restored the public's faith in the Congress. Consequently, leaders from various political factions are now voluntarily coming forward to express their desire to join the party.
Speaking to the media, Damanpreet Singh Badal described this moment as a "homecoming" for him. He recalled that he had previously left the Congress alongside the late Pradeep Chhabra—a former President of the Chandigarh Congress and a founder of the Aam Aadmi Party—but has now realized that the Congress is the only platform from which he can effectively serve his ward and the city.
Meanwhile, Ujjwal Bhasin stated that he has been actively working within the legal fraternity for a considerable period; observing the Congress party's strong influence and standing among advocates, he decided to join the party. On this occasion, the Congress leaders and councilors present warmly welcomed all the new members, stating that their joining would further strengthen the party and that, in the days to come, other leaders—inspired by the Congress ideology—would also join the party.
