Extensive Discussions Held Between Anganwadi/Crèche Workers' Union, Chandigarh, and the Director of the Social Welfare Department; Consensus Reached on Most Demands
Chandigarh 07 April ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Today, April 7, 2026, a lengthy discussion took place between the Director of the Social Welfare Department and office bearers of the Anganwadi/Crèche Workers and Helpers Union regarding their demands. Adopting a positive approach toward the issues raised, the Director of the Social Welfare Department, Palika Arora, expressed her agreement on the majority of these demands. The union's delegation was led by the Federation's President, Gopal Dutt Joshi, and Union President, Rajendra Katoch. The delegation comprised representatives from the Anganwadi unions—including Union President Neelam Kumari and General Secretary Renu—as well as representatives from the Crèche Workers' Union: Vice President Rekha Gora, Damayanti, Babita, Jasbir Kaur, and Simarjit Kaur.
Following an extensive discussion during the meeting—covering demands such as granting Dearness Allowance (DA) to Anganwadi and Crèche workers on the lines of Kerala and Puducherry (by recognizing them as full-time employees); ensuring 100% promotion opportunities for Anganwadi helpers and workers; providing additional allowances for work performed beyond regular duty hours; granting Travel Allowance (TA) and Daily Allowance (DA), as well as medical facilities and ESI coverage, for duties assigned outside their designated areas; protecting the salaries of personnel transferred from the ICCW to the ICDS; reinstating seven Crèche workers/helpers—whose services were terminated out of a spirit of vendetta—back to duty; enforcing retirement at age 65 in accordance with ICDS norms; ensuring the timely disbursement of honorariums; resolving technical glitches associated with the Face App-based attendance system; granting summer and winter vacations similar to the pattern in Punjab; putting an end to the issuance of baseless notices or warnings; curbing the harassment faced by workers and helpers; and ensuring the proper functioning and timely repair of height and weight measurement machines.
The Director assured the representatives that certain demands would be forwarded to higher authorities for approval, while the majority of the demands would be resolved at her own level. She further gave an assurance that weekly meetings would be held every Wednesday to address and resolve any issues faced by the staff. Subsequently, office-bearers of the Federation and the Union held a meeting in a cordial atmosphere, expressing their gratitude to the Director for agreeing to consider their demands and reiterating their commitment to extending their full cooperation in the department's work.
