Chandigarh 07 April ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : On April 06, 2026, during the Panthic gathering convened by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee at Teja Singh Samundri Hall, Sri Amritsar Sahib, it was felt that for Sikhs, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is living and the true Guru. The sacred Gurbani enshrined within Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji serves as a guiding light and holds the status of the Guru in a direct and manifest form. This unique status of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was bestowed by Sri Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru, through his command to the Sikhs before his merging with the True light.
In this regard, in light of the announcements and resolutions made during the Panthic gathering held on April 06, 2026 and in the press by the respected President of the SGPC, an emergency meeting of the sub-committee constituted by the SGPC was held on April 7, 2026 at the SGPC Sub-Office in Chandigarh. During the meeting, it was observed that as per various statements issued by the Chief Minister of Punjab and his representatives, a special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly has been convened on April 13, 2026 to amend the law in order to prevent incidents of sacrilege related to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and Gurbani.
In this connection, the Punjab Government had sought suggestions from the SGPC regarding the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scriptures Bill, 2025. However, despite repeated communications from the SGPC since September 3, 2025, neither was the required action communicated nor was any proper correspondence maintained by the government or the Assembly.
Now, as per information received through the media regarding proposed amendments to the Jagat Jor Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Satkar Act, 2008, uncertainty and confusion prevail, leading to doubts within the Sikh community about the intentions of the government. The government has not shared any draft or details of the proposed amendments with the SGPC.
Therefore, during today’s meeting, the sub-committee nominated by the SGPC has, through a letter, urged the government to immediately share the proposed draft or details of the amendments with the SGPC and make them public for the Sikh community, so that appropriate suggestions can be provided. A copy of the letter sent to the Chief Minister (No. 20052 (T) dated 07-04-2026) is attached.
Members present in the sub-committee meeting held on April 7, 2026: Mohinder Mohan Singh Bedi, Retired Justice, Puran Singh Hundal, Senior Advocate, Dr. Paramvir Singh, Member, Sikh History Research Board, Baltej Singh Dhillon, Advocate, Retired District Attorney, Kehar Singh, Former Chairman, Punjab School Education Board, Prabhjot Kaur, Member, Sikh History Research Board, Kiranjot Kaur, Member, SGPC, Bhagwant Singh Sialka, Member, SGPC, Amardeep Singh Dharni, Advocate, Amanbir Singh Siyali, Advocate & Legal Advisor, Barjinder Singh Sodhi, Advocate, Lakhvir Singh, Assistant Secretary (Coordinator)
