Punjab Government Must Address Fodder Shortage: Punjab Gaushala Mahasangh
Fodder Crisis Poses Threat to Lives of Thousands of Animals
S.A.S.Nagar 5 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Punjab Gaushala Mahasangh (Punjab Cow Shelter Federation) has demanded that the Punjab government immediately impose a ban on the hoarding of fodder (specifically *tudi* or wheat straw) and take necessary measures, including making proper arrangements, to save the animals. Swami Krishnanand Ji Maharaj, National President of the Goseva Mission, stated that Punjab is currently facing an extremely severe crisis regarding the availability of fodder. Several cardboard factories, brick kilns, and coal-fired boilers have purchased fodder from farmers on a massive scale, directly from the fields. Consequently, cow shelters (*Gaushalas*) are unable to procure fodder—something they previously obtained with ease. He warned that hundreds of thousands of cattle are on the verge of starvation.
He further asserted that the moral responsibility for any animal deaths resulting from this fodder shortage would lie with the concerned administration and the government. Swami Maharaj noted that due to the scarcity of fodder, its prices are skyrocketing, placing a significant financial burden on dairy farmers and livestock owners. Swami Maharaj pointed out that although the state government collects funds through the 'Gau Upkar' (Cow Cess), reports indicate that registered cow shelters do not receive timely or adequate financial assistance; as a result, the fodder crisis persists.
Swami Krishnanand Ji Maharaj declared that if the Punjab government fails to fulfill their demands, they will be left with no option but to launch a protest movement. "We are giving the state government two days to consider our demands; should they fail to do so, we will be compelled to picket the residences of the Punjab Chief Minister, ministers, and MLAs. If, within these two days, the state government does not invite us for a dialogue regarding our demands, then on the upcoming Saturday, cow volunteers (*Gausevaks*) and cow shelter owners across Punjab will march—accompanied by their cattle (*Shiv Nandi*)—to picket the residences of officials in their respective districts."
