'Ragini' lovers throng Kalagram on day two City resonates with rustic folk tunes of Haryana
Chandigarh 13 March ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : On the second day of the ongoing "Ragini Utsav-26", an initiative of the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the sprawling Kalagram open-air theatre was packed like sardines well before the start of the evening programme. Suman Sharma, Deputy Mayor, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, was the chief guest on the occasion, while the guest of honour was the joint director, Punjab and Haryana High Court, and head (North India), Sanskar Bharti, Mr Naveen Sharma.
The programme started with the presentation of 'nukkad natak' "Plastic hatao, priyavaran bachao..." by Manthan Art and Theatre Society, Chandigarh. It was aimed at sensatising the masses about the idea of cleanliness. The programme turned musical with the power-packed rendition of the top-notch Ragini singer Om Prakash Bali Sharma (and party).He started with his popular Ragini number, including "Dharti Haryana ki veeran ki, yo dharam karam ki thatti se, sachche mann te jo kaam kare, kismet bhi jholi bhar jaati se..." among others, which earned him a full-throated appreciation.
Another Ragini icon, Satvir (Kaptan Bishaniya) and party wowed the audience with his hit Ragini numbers, one after the other. His composition had a social message equating the girl child with boy child, exhibiting the magic of his vocal chords.The star performer of the evening was Somvir (and party), who took the centrestage and regaled the audience for more than an hour. He doled out a social values- driven composition, which evoked an overwhelming response from the audience. He presented his composition in a typical Haryanavi tradition "Maati ki khushbu mahare gaon ki, mann ne baar baar bulave se, saada jeevan, unche vichar, yo sanskar sikhave se", which was well received by the audience. He also entertained the audience with some hilarious tidbits from a typical day to day Haryanavi rustic life.He left the audience spellbound with his hit Ragini numbers. "Beta-beti ek smaan, yo sandesh jagana se, parh likh kar aage badhna, har ghar deep jalana se" with the audience cheering the performer. Ragini legends, who will perform tomorrow evening (March 14) include Inderjit (Kundiyan), Sonu Bhagna, and Narender Dangi. They will perform with their troupes The daily festival timings are 5 pm, onwards, with the facility of free entry for visitors. NZCC Director Mohd Furqan Khan, the guiding spirit behind the theme initiative, on the occasion stated that the chief objective of the 'Ragini' festival is to promote Haryanvi folk art and culture, as well as to connect the younger generation to their rich cultural heritage.
