National Conference to Focus on Women’s Hormonal Health and Obesity
Chandigarh 6 March ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Endocrine Society of India (ESI) will organise a two-day national conference titled “WE CARE 2026 – Women Endocrine Care & ESI Obesity Week” on March 7 and 8 at Radisson . The conference will focus on women’s hormonal health and the growing concern of obesity and metabolic disorders in India. The event comes at a time when obesity is emerging as a major public health challenge. Data from the National Family Health Survey (2019–21) shows that nearly one-fourth of men and women in India are either overweight or obese, marking a four-percentage-point increase since 2015–16. The problem is particularly prominent among women in several states, including Delhi and Punjab.
Organising Secretary Dr Gagan Priya said the increasing burden of obesity and hormonal disorders highlights the need for focused scientific dialogue. She noted that women experience several hormonal transitions during their lifetime—from puberty and reproductive years to pregnancy and menopause—which significantly influence long-term metabolic health. “Obesity poses serious health risks for women, including polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and certain cancers such as breast and uterine cancer. Importantly, maternal obesity can also have a transgenerational impact by increasing the risk of obesity and metabolic disorders in children,” she said.
Scientific Chairperson Dr Emmy Grewal said the conference will feature expert-led scientific sessions, panel discussions and hands-on workshops aimed at equipping clinicians with updated knowledge and practical skills. The programme will address key endocrine challenges such as obesity, diabetes, thyroid disorders and menopausal health. The conference will also feature prominent international and national experts including Donna Ryan, Past President of the World Obesity Federation, and Nikhil Tandon, Professor and Dean at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The event will offer eight PMC credit hours and is expected to attract leading endocrinologists, physicians and researchers from across the country. Organisers said the conference aims to translate scientific evidence into actionable strategies to improve health outcomes for women.
