Community Centers Could Become "Community Living Rooms"
Giving a New Direction to Community Life—Fostering Greater Social Interaction Among Residents
Chandigarh 25 April ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Architect Srishti Raizada is spearheading a holistic initiative—SUR (Sustainable Urban-Rural)—which has received recognition under the Department of Science and Technology and has been honored by NITI Aayog under the Atal Innovation Mission (Government of India). According to Srishti Raizada, this program serves as a practical, implementable model for simultaneously strengthening public health, the local economy, and community life. It reconnects urban populations with their regional rural ecosystems through a focus on nutrition, preventive healthcare, and participatory community systems.
Srishti Raizada explained that by transforming a community space into a "living room," an environment can be created where people can strengthen their mutual dialogue, connections, and understanding. She noted that, under this project, a pilot run of a simple "Chandigarh Living Room" model was initially conducted at two community centers in Chandigarh. One was held at the Community Center in Sector 19, and more recently, another was organized at the Community Center in Sector 42. These initiatives demonstrated how existing spaces can be transformed into vibrant hubs for fostering a healthier and more connected community life.
Srishti Raizada stated that, given the hectic pace of modern life, there is a pressing need to launch a pilot "Sustainable Community Hub" at one of Chandigarh's community centers—one that can evolve into a scalable model applicable across the city and beyond. Srishti Raizada also emphasized the importance of adopting traditional, chemical-free dietary habits and reducing the use of plastics.
