Extensive discussions held between the Anganwadi/Crèche Workers Union, Chandigarh, and the Director of the Social Welfare Department regarding their demands; consensus reached on the majority of issues.

Chandigarh 08 April ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : On April 7, 2026, a lengthy discussion took place between the Director of the Social Welfare Department and the office bearers of the Anganwadi/Crèche Workers and Helpers Union regarding their demands. Smt. Palika Arora, Director of the Social Welfare Department, adopted a positive approach towards most of the demands and expressed her agreement. The Union's delegation was led by the Federation President, Gopal Dutt Joshi, and the Union President, Rajendra Katoch. The delegation included Neelam Kumari (President, Anganwadi Union), Renu (General Secretary), and Rekha Gora (Vice President, Crèche Workers), along with Damayanti, Babita, Jasbir Kaur, and Simarjit Kaur.
Following a lengthy discussion during the meeting—covering demands such as granting Dearness Allowance (DA) to Anganwadi and Crèche workers on the lines of Kerala and Puducherry (by recognizing them as full-time employees); ensuring 100% promotion opportunities for Anganwadi helpers and workers; providing additional allowances for work performed beyond regular duty hours; granting Travel Allowance (TA) and Daily Allowance (DA), as well as medical facilities and ESI coverage, for duties assigned outside their designated areas; protecting the salaries of personnel transferred from the ICCW to the ICDS; reinstating seven Crèche workers/helpers—whose services were terminated out of a spirit of vendetta—back to duty; enforcing retirement at the age of 65 in accordance with ICDS norms; ensuring the timely disbursement of honorariums; resolving technical glitches associated with the Face App-based attendance system; granting summer and winter vacations on the pattern of Punjab; putting an end to the issuance of baseless notices or warnings; preventing the harassment of workers and helpers; and repairing or ensuring the timely maintenance of height and weight measurement machines—the Director assured the representatives that certain demands would be forwarded to higher authorities for approval, while the majority of the demands would be resolved at her own level.
She further gave an assurance that weekly meetings would be held every Wednesday to address and resolve any issues faced by the staff. Subsequently, office-bearers of the Federation and the Union held a meeting in a cordial atmosphere to express their gratitude to the Director for agreeing to consider their demands, and they reiterated their commitment to extending their full cooperation in the functioning of the Department. In this regard, a meeting of the Union's Executive Committee was held today, during which the details of the discussions held with the Director of the Social Welfare Department regarding the demands were presented. In light of the consensus reached and the assurances given within a positive and harmonious environment, it was decided to postpone the *Dharna* (protest sit-in)—scheduled to be held on April 9, 2026, at the office of the Social Welfare Department in Sector 17—for the next 15 days, with the hope that the administration would fulfill its promises.
