Scar-less kidney stone surgery successfully performed on 8-year-old child at Park Grecian Hospital Mohali
Chandigarh 03 April ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The doctors at PARK Grecian Hospital, Mohali successfully performed a scar-less kidney stone surgery on an 8-year-old child. Giving information here on Friday, Dr Harshita Kour, pediatric urologist at PARK Grecian Hospital, Mohali said that child was diagnosed with a 14 mm stone in the left kidney. It was treated using Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS), an advanced minimally invasive procedure that allows surgeons to reach the kidney through the natural urinary tract without any external incision. Using a fine endoscopic instrument, the stone was fragmented with a laser and completely cleared. The child was discharged in stable condition after successful recovery, Dr Kour informed.
She further highlighted that kidney stones are increasingly being seen in children due to lifestyle changes such as lack of physical activity and diets high in salt and sugary foods. With advancements in medical technology, procedures like RIRS have become a boon in pediatric patients as they avoid cuts, reduce pain, minimize hospital stay, and ensure faster recovery, said Dr Kour who has over 11 years of experience in pediatric surgery and has completed a specialized 2-year fellowship in Pediatric Urology from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
Traditionally, larger kidney stones in children required more invasive surgical approaches. However, RIRS is now emerging as an effective and safe alternative in selected cases, offering excellent stone clearance with minimal morbidity and quicker recovery, Dr Kour elaborated. Signs & symptoms of kidney stones in children: • Severe pain in abdomen or side • Blood in urine • Nausea and vomiting • Frequent urination or pain during urination • Fever in case of infectionRisk factors: • Low water intake (dehydration) • High salt and junk food consumption • Sedentary lifestyle • Family history of kidney stones • Metabolic disorders
