Resentment Among Backward Classes Over Absence of OBC Category in Census 2027 Online Form
Not mentioning OBC in the Self-Enumeration Online Form of Census 2027 is a major betrayal of backward classes: Gurbhej Tibbi, National Coordinator, OBC Department, All India Congress Committee, Incharge Jammu & Kashmir
Ferozepur/Chandigarh 3 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A wave of resentment is being seen among backward classes over the absence of any mention of OBC/backward categories in the self-enumeration online form of Census 2027. In this regard, senior Congress leader Gurbhej Tibbi issued a press note describing it as highly unfortunate and a major betrayal of backward classes.
Gurbhej Tibbi, National Coordinator of the Congress OBC Department, said that caste-based census is the need of the hour, as it would reveal the true social, economic, and educational condition of various sections of the country. He alleged that the Government of India is avoiding a caste-based census because it fears that once backward classes know their actual population and strength, they will become more aware of their rights.
Tibbi said that if the government does not take this issue seriously, the OBC community will strongly oppose it and will be compelled to fight for its rights. It is noteworthy that under Census 2027, the Government of India has introduced the facility of self-enumeration for the convenience of the general public. Through this system, citizens can fill in their information online themselves, and this facility will remain available until 14 May 2026. During this period, people can submit their details from home through the official portal, but no separate column has been included in the form for backward classes.
The Congress leader said that if the government truly talks about social justice and equality, then collecting accurate data regarding the population and condition of the OBC community is extremely important. Tibbi demanded that the government should immediately include an OBC/backward class column in the self-enumeration form so that every section of society gets proper representation. On this occasion, Gurbhej Tibbi also targeted the state government, alleging that the National Commission for Backward Classes has repeatedly written to the Punjab Government directing it to implement due reservation for backward classes, but despite this, the Punjab Government is also failing to deliver justice to backward classes.
He further said that the absence of OBC mention in the Census 2027 self-enumeration online form is a major betrayal of backward classes. It proves that neither the Central Government nor the State Government is taking decisions in favour of backward classes. He warned both governments that if appropriate steps are not taken in this regard, the BC community will be forced to launch a struggle.
