Anganwadi Workers Have Not Received Honorarium for the Past 4 Months – Appeal Made to Director, Social Welfare Department, for Immediate Payment
Chandigarh 11 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : In chandigarh more than 900 Anganwadi workers and helpers in the city have not received their due honorarium payments for the last four months. On one hand, the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union—along with the Federation of UT Employees and Workers, Chandigarh—is demanding that Anganwadi workers and helpers be paid at "DC rates" (Deputy Commissioner rates), modeled after the systems in Puducherry and Kerala, to commensurate with their ever-increasing workload. On the other hand, the reality is that these employees have not received even their regular honorarium payments since December 2025. In this regard, a delegation from the Federation met with the Director of the Social Welfare Department, Ms. Radhika Singh, on May 6. They apprised her of the situation and appealed for the immediate release of the pending honorarium. Taking immediate cognizance of the matter, she assured them that the payments would be released; however, the honorarium has not yet been disbursed. Consequently, Anganwadi workers and helpers are facing significant hardship, and a sense of resentment towards the administration is growing among them.
It is pertinent to note that the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union had announced a sit-in protest on April 9 to press for an eight-point charter of demands—including the implementation of DC rates and the timely payment of wages. In light of this, the then Director, Ms. Palika Arora, held extensive discussions with the Union and the Federation on April 7, assuring them that wage hikes and other demands would be implemented within a stipulated timeframe. Subsequently, she was transferred, and the official proceedings of that meeting have yet to be issued. The Federation's President, Gopal Dutt Joshi; Chairman, Rajendra Katoch; and General Secretary, Harkesh Chand—among others—have appealed to the Director of the Social Welfare Department to release the honorarium payments without further delay, so as to avoid compelling the Union to resort to further agitation.
