Governments running parties must stop mocking democracy : Giani Harpreet Singh
Chandigarh 8 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Giani Harpreet Singh, President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) and former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, said in a written press release that the governments ruling in Punjab and at the Centre are mocking the democratic process with their vendetta-driven actions. He stated that people elect a government by casting their precious vote so that the government will solve their problems and raise their standard of living, making life easier. However, intoxicated by power, governments are entangled in mutual rivalries instead of working for the people. He pointed out that after the recent ED raids, seven elected Rajya Sabha members of a party defected to the Central government. In retaliation, the Punjab government is not only withdrawing security from those members but also registering criminal cases against them. As the next move, the Centre has activated the ED against the Punjab government, and continuous raids are being conducted.
Giani Harpreet Singh said that law and order in Punjab is deteriorating. Bomb blasts are occurring regularly. The Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Sanjay Singh are directly blaming the BJP for these blasts, while Punjab BJP leaders are blaming the Aam Aadmi Party. In such a situation, where should the common people look for their safety and welfare? Punjab Police is arresting hundreds of youths in connection with these blasts and blaming Pakistan. Has the duty of elected governments been reduced to creating confusion and spreading fear among the people?
According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Punjab ranks first in drug trafficking, even though the fifty-kilometer border belt is under the control of the Centre through the BSF. Punjab ranks second in the country in deaths caused by drugs. The remaining youth are being pushed towards gangsterism. Under "war on gangsters", the police are picking up hundreds of youths daily. Yet people continue to receive threats for extortion. Are the Centre and Punjab governments together turning Punjab into "Rangla Punjab" or are they destroying it through mutual animosity?
Giani Harpreet Singh said that electing different parties through voting is the right of the common people, and leaders who attain power through votes must respect that right. Only then can democratic values survive. The BJP government at the Centre should, instead of obstructing state governments, take everyone along to strengthen the nation. Similarly, the state government should work for the people who gave them a massive mandate, rather than engaging in politics of revenge. Those sitting in governments should not forget that real power lies with the people, and when it comes to changing governments, the people show no mercy.
