Chandigarh 8 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A delegation of the Punjab Congress led by PCC general secretary organization Capt Sandeep Sandhu today met the State Election Commissioner and raised the issue of non-cooperation by the local administration towards the opposition parties regarding the conduct of the ensuing local bodies elections. Besides Sandhu, the delegation consisted of senior party leaders and former ministers including Balbir Singh Sidhu, Gurkirat Kotli, Sukhpal Bhullar and Ashwani Sharma.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Sandhu said, the delegation brought to the notice of the State Election Commissioner various difficulties faced by the opposition parties, particularly the Congress vis-à-vis the local administration about the ensuing local bodies elections in Punjab like Municipal Committees, Nagar Panchayats and Municipal Corporations. The PCC general secretary stated that the party urged the commissioner that directions may be issued to the local administration that it should cooperate with the opposition parties in connection with various administrative requirements.“The local administration does not entertain any issues, complaints or objections that we raise from time to time, which are otherwise genuine and justified”, he said, adding, “the local administration is completely hostile towards the opposition”.Besides, Sandhu added, the party also raised the issue of the voter lists as these do not properly match the maps notified for particular areas. He said the voter lists were not homogeneous in the sense that in some wards there are 2000 voters while in some others there are as many as 5000 voters.
