Consumers Association, Chandigarh Demands Strict Action Against Illegal LPG Refilling and Black Marketing
Chandigarh 26 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Consumers Association Chandigarh has expressed serious concern over the alleged illegal refilling and black marketing of LPG gas cylinders operating in the city and nearby areas following the recent fire incident in Sector-45. The association has demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter and strict action against those responsible.
Association General Secretary N.K. Jhingan stated that the organization has sent a detailed memorandum to the Adviser to the Administrator, Home Secretary, Deputy Commissioner, Director General of Police, Senior Superintendent of Police, Chief Fire Officer, the Food and Civil Supplies Departments of Punjab and Haryana, oil companies, and other concerned authorities. The memorandum stated that this illegal trade is becoming a major threat to public safety.
According to the association, the fire incident in Sector-45 may allegedly be linked to the illegal refilling of LPG cylinders. It is reported that gas is being illegally transferred from large domestic cylinders into smaller cylinders, which are then sold for around Rs 300 or more to vendors selling kulcha-chana, tea, fast food, and other food items. These cylinders are reportedly being used in markets, around schools, and at public places. The association further alleged that such illegal activities may also be operating through utensil and crockery shops in Burail Market and some other areas. The organization has demanded a joint enforcement drive by the Food and Supplies Department, Legal Metrology Department, oil companies, Chandigarh Police, and the Fire Department.
The association stated that vendors using such gas cylinders should be questioned to expose the illegal refilling and supply network so that action can be taken against the entire racket. The association has urged the administration to conduct immediate inspections and raids in suspicious markets and colonies, investigate the illegal LPG supply chain, identify those involved in illegal storage and transportation, and initiate strict legal action against the culprits. It also appealed for regular monitoring to prevent the commercial misuse of domestic gas cylinders. N.K. Jhingan warned that if such activities are not curbed in time, major accidents could occur in the future, leading to heavy loss of life and property. He also appealed to the general public to immediately report any suspicious gas refilling activity to the concerned authorities to help ensure public safety.
