Demand raised for conducting Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections through ballot paper
Chandigarh 1 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Senior Vice President of Manimajra EWS Residence Welfare Association and social worker Rajbir Singh Bhartiya has raised questions on the huge difference in the results of the recent municipal elections of Haryana and Punjab and has demanded that the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections be conducted through ballot paper.
In a press note, he stated that despite similar social and geographical conditions in the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana, there was a significant difference in electoral outcomes. He emphasized the need for a public debate on the EVM and ballot paper systems regarding this contradiction.
Rajbir Singh Bharatiya urged the Election Commission to consider using paper ballots in the upcoming Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections in December 2026 and in future elections to address doubts about the transparency of EVMs. He stated that public trust is paramount in a democracy, and the election process must be completely transparent and trustworthy. It is noteworthy that within a span of just a few days, civic elections in Haryana were held through EVMs and in Punjab on ballot papers.
