Doctors at Max Hospital, Mohali, Replant Four Amputated Fingers of 39-Year-Old Woman

S.A.S.Nagar 9 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : In a remarkable life and limb saving procedure, doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, successfully performed a complex replantation surgery to restore four amputated fingers of a 39-year-old female patient, following a traumatic accident. The patient, Surinderpal Kaur, resident of Morinda, Punjab, was brought to the emergency department of Max Hospital, Mohali, with a severe hand injury sustained while working with a sharp cutting tool. She had suffered complete amputation of the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers of her right hand, accompanied by heavy bleeding and exposure of bone, muscles, and tendons. Recognizing the critical nature of the injury, the emergency team acted swiftly to stabilize the patient and preserve the amputated parts.

A multidisciplinary surgical team, led by Dr. Rishi Dhawan, Associate Director - Plastic Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, decided to perform replantation of the fingers. The surgery involved reconnecting bones, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels using advanced microsurgical techniques to restore blood flow and function in the fingers. The surgery required exceptional precision and coordination, as surgeons carefully reconnected multiple structures to ensure both survival and functional recovery of the fingers. Post-surgery, blood flow was restored in the reattached fingers, and the patient is stable with encouraging signs of recovery.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Rishi Dhawan said, “Replantation of multiple fingers is a highly challenging and time-sensitive procedure. Immediate medical intervention, combined with advanced microsurgical expertise, is crucial in such cases. We are pleased to see positive outcomes so far, and with proper rehabilitation, the patient is expected to regain significant hand function within a span of xx weeks/months.”This case highlights Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali’s advanced capabilities in handling complex trauma and reconstructive microsurgeries, reinforcing its position as a centre of excellence for emergency and specialized surgical care.
