Max Hospital, Mohali raises awareness on asthma management

Chandigarh 5 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : On the occasion of World Asthma Day, doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, proper treatment, and awareness in managing asthma, a chronic respiratory condition affecting many people worldwide and increasingly seen across all age groups.

“Asthma is a long-term disease that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing, persistent cough, chest tightness, and difficulty in breathing. If left unmanaged, it can significantly affect quality of life and, in severe cases, become life-threatening.”

Dr. Kashish Dutta, consultant-pulmonology at Max Hospital, Mohali, said, “Asthma is a manageable condition if diagnosed early and treated correctly. Unfortunately, many patients ignore symptoms or depend on incorrect treatment methods. With proper use of inhalers, regular monitoring, and avoiding triggers like pollution, dust, smoke, and seasonal allergies, patients can lead normal and active lives.”

Dr. Kashish further said, “Air pollution and changing lifestyle habits are significantly contributing to the rising number of asthma cases, especially in urban areas. Patients should follow prescribed treatment plans, avoid self-medication, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen. It is equally important to remove the stigma associated with inhaler use. Educating patients and caregivers can greatly improve long-term outcomes and quality of life.”

It is also advised people experiencing frequent cough, wheezing, disturbed sleep due to breathing difficulty, or repeated chest congestion to seek timely medical evaluation instead of delaying treatment, she advised.
