World No Tobacco Day: Livasa Hospital organizes awareness sessions
Chandigarh 30 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : On the eve of World No Tobacco Day, Livasa Hospital, Mohali organised a series of awareness sessions and tobacco cessation initiatives to educate people about the harmful effects of tobacco and encouraging individuals to take the first step towards quitting. The campaign focused on spreading awareness about the severe impact of tobacco on overall health, including its role in causing cancer, heart disease, lung disorders, stroke and several other life-threatening conditions, said Anurag Yadav, CEO, Livasa Hospitals. Doctors and specialists from multiple departments interacted with participants through counselling sessions, awareness talks and community engagement activities, while also highlighting the benefits of quitting tobacco at any stage of life.
During the occasion, Dr. Jatin Sarin, director–medical oncology at Livasa Hospital Mohali, highlighted the link between tobacco and cancer. He stated that a large percentage of cancer-related deaths are directly associated with tobacco use and many of these cases are preventable through timely cessation. Tobacco gradually damages lung function and is one of the leading causes of chronic respiratory illnesses such as COPD and emphysema, said Dr. Sonal, consultant pulmonology. Dr. Pradeep Sharma, associate director & HOD – neurology emphasised that smoking significantly increases the risk of stroke and neurological disorders by damaging blood vessels and reducing oxygen supply to the brain.
Speaking about cardiovascular risks, Dr. H.K. Bali, chairman of cardiac sciences said that there is no safe level of tobacco consumption and quitting tobacco substantially reduces the risk of heart attacks and cardiac diseases over time. Counselling, medical support and family encouragement play a vital role in helping individuals quit successfully, said Dr. Priyanshu, senior consultant medical oncology.
