GMCH-32 Hosts Mental Health Systems Assessment Consensus Meeting Under NMHS-2
Chandigarh 10 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Department of Community Medicine and Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector-32, Chandigarh, organized a Mental Health Systems Assessment (MHSA) Consensus Meeting under the National Mental Health Survey-2 (NMHS-2). Prof. Dinesh Kumar Walia welcomed the dignitaries and stakeholders. Prof. Ravneet Kaur, Director Principal, GMCH-32, emphasized the importance of evidence-based planning for strengthening mental healthcare services and appreciated the efforts of the NMHS-2 team.
Sunil Kumar, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, attended as the Guest of Honour and highlighted the need to prioritize mental health as an integral part of overall health and well-being. Dr. Sonia Puri, Head, Department of Community Medicine, and Prof. Priti Arun, Department of Psychiatry, presented an overview of NMHS-2 and the Mental Health Systems Assessment. They highlighted that NMHS-2 will cover all 28 States and 8 Union Territories and provide state-wise estimates of mental morbidity using ICD-11, assess treatment gaps, document pathways to care, evaluate mental health systems, and develop state-specific fact sheets and action plans.The speakers also discussed the achievements of the National Mental Health Survey-1 (2015–16), which estimated the prevalence of mental and substance use disorders, assessed treatment gaps, healthcare utilization, disability, and the status of mental health services in India. NMHS-2 builds upon these findings with wider coverage and updated methodology. Participants were informed that more than one billion people worldwide are living with mental disorders, highlighting the urgent need for stronger mental health systems. The discussion also reviewed India's mental health initiatives, including the National Mental Health Programme (1982), National Mental Health Policy (2014), and Mental Healthcare Act (2017).
The meeting reviewed Chandigarh's mental health infrastructure, workforce availability, training activities, stakeholder partnerships, monitoring mechanisms, and ongoing initiatives such as mental healthcare integration in primary care, mobile mental health services, community outreach, public awareness activities, and implementation of mental health legislation. Dr. Girish Rao from NIMHANS joined virtually and appreciated the efforts of the Chandigarh team. He noted that NMHS-2 would provide crucial evidence for strengthening mental health services and reducing treatment gaps across the country. The meeting concluded with stakeholder consultations and consensus-building discussions aimed at developing recommendations for improving mental healthcare services in Chandigarh and supporting evidence-based policy planning under NMHS-2.
