World Environment Day 2026 Observed at Panjab University, Chandigarh

Chandigarh 5 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : NSS Panjab University, Chandigarh, in association with MY Bharat, Chandigarh and Students for Development (SFD), Chandigarh, observed World Environment Day 2026 at the Dr. SSBUICET Ground, in front of A.C. Joshi Library, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The programme was organised under the leadership of Prof. Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh, with the active participation of NSS Programme Officers, volunteers, students, faculty members, and youth organisations.The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr Anupam Bahri, Programme Coordinator, NSS, Panjab University, Dr Nemi Chand Golia, State Liaison Officer (SLO), Chandigarh, and Vinay Kumar, District Youth Officer, Chandigarh.

The event commenced with the welcoming of dignitaries, followed by a formal inauguration ceremony. Distinguished guests present on the occasion included Dr. Nemi Chand Golia, State Liaison Officer, Chandigarh; Dr Namita Gupta, Dean Student Welfare (Women), Panjab University; Yogesh Kumar Rawal, Dean Student Welfare, Panjab University; Prof. (Dr.) Kashmir Singh, Associate Dean Student Welfare (ADSW), Panjab University, Chandigarh; Prof. Parshant Gautam, Department of Hotel Management, Panjab University; Prof. Vishal Sharma, Department of Forensic Science, Panjab University; Mr. Gurpreet Chaudhary, Students for Development, Chandigarh; and Preetika, MY Bharat representative. NSS volunteers and organisers felicitated the dignitaries in recognition of their contributions towards youth development and environmental conservation. A major highlight of the programme was a Plantation Drive, during which saplings were planted by the dignitaries, NSS volunteers, and participants to promote environmental sustainability and encourage a greener campus.
Addressing the gathering, the dignitaries emphasised the urgent need for environmental protection, sustainable living practices, waste reduction, and active youth participation in conservation efforts. They encouraged students to become responsible environmental stewards and contribute towards building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future. As part of the celebrations, competitions including Poster Making, Slogan Writing, and Pot Decorating were organised to promote environmental awareness and creativity among students. Participants showcased innovative ideas and artistic expressions focusing on environmental conservation and sustainable development. The winners of the competitions were honoured during the Prize Distribution Ceremony, where certificates and prizes were presented by the dignitaries. The efforts and creativity of all participants were highly appreciated. A Cleanliness Drive (Plog Run & Cleanliness Drive) was also conducted by NSS volunteers, reinforcing the message of community participation in maintaining a clean environment.

The programme further included the administration of an Environmental Pledge, wherein all participants pledged to protect natural resources, reduce pollution, and adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr Anupam Bahri, Programme Coordinator, NSS, Panjab University, who expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, dignitaries, faculty members, NSS Programme Officers, volunteers, MY Bharat, Students for Development, and all participants for making the event a success.
