Demand Raised in Chandigarh to Declare Cow as ‘Rashtra Mata’; Memorandum Submitted to MP Manish Tewari
Chandigarh 13 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A delegation of social activists on Monday submitted a memorandum to Chandigarh Member of Parliament Manish Tewari, urging the Government of India to declare the cow as “Rashtra Mata” (National Mother) and to implement an effective national policy for the protection of cattle across the country. The memorandum was addressed to the President of India, the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Punjab. According to Ashok Tiwari, National Spokesperson of Shri Hindu Takht, the memorandum stated that the cow holds a unique place in India’s cultural heritage, agriculture, rural economy and the faith of millions of people. On this basis, the delegation appealed to the Central Government to initiate the necessary constitutional and legal process for declaring the cow as “Rashtra Mata.”
The memorandum also called for the implementation of a comprehensive national cattle protection policy, removal of illegal encroachments from grazing lands with legal protection for such land, impartial investigations into illegal animal slaughter and illegal slaughterhouses, and strict action against those found guilty in accordance with the law. The delegation further demanded public disclosure of the utilisation of cow welfare cess funds, establishment and strengthening of modern gaushalas in every district, a special national campaign for the rehabilitation and treatment of stray cattle, and effective measures to curb cattle smuggling and illegal transportation.
The memorandum urged both the Central and State Governments to launch public awareness campaigns on cattle conservation and to formulate a comprehensive policy through consultation with all stakeholders. The delegation emphasized that the issue extends beyond religious sentiments and is closely linked to India’s cultural heritage, rural economy, animal welfare and environmental conservation. MP Manish Tewari assured the delegation that he would raise the demands of Shri Hindu Takht seriously in Parliament.
