Garbage Dumps Across Mohali Raise Health Concerns Despite NGT Strictness
Punjab Congress Seva Dal District Mohali General Secretary Vishal Sharma slams Municipal Corporation and administration, says rain has worsened the situation
S.A.S.Nagar 20 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The deteriorating garbage management situation in Mohali has raised serious concerns among residents. Punjab Congress Seva Dal District Mohali General Secretary and social worker Vishal Sharma has criticised the Municipal Corporation and administration over garbage lying in the open at several locations across the city. During his visit to various parts of Mohali, Vishal Sharma said that garbage heaps can be seen at several locations, including Balongi, Badmajra, National Highway Road and various smaller localities. He said that the situation has become particularly problematic after the recent rainfall, as wet garbage is causing foul smell and creating unhygienic conditions. According to Vishal Sharma, garbage has also accumulated around villages falling under the jurisdiction of the Mohali Municipal Corporation, including Madanpur, Kumbhra, Shahimajra, Sohana and Mator. Stray animals and dogs often rummage through the garbage and scatter it onto the roads, further worsening the sanitation situation.
Vishal Sharma said that despite the strict stand taken by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on solid waste management violations, garbage continues to remain scattered at several places. He said that the situation raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the existing waste-management system. The garbage lying in the open, particularly during the rainy season, can lead to foul odour, insect infestation and unhygienic surroundings.Vishal Sharma alleged that the Municipal Corporation has failed to provide an effective and permanent mechanism for garbage disposal in Mohali. He said that the situation has reached a stage where people are dumping garbage at places that were not even designated as small dumping points. As a result, garbage is gradually spreading across residential areas, roadsides and other public places. He said that stray animals and dogs scatter the waste, causing garbage to reach the roads and creating inconvenience for pedestrians and motorists.
Vishal Sharma warned that if the authorities fail to take immediate corrective measures, the city’s cleanliness and sanitation ranking could also be adversely affected in the future. He demanded immediate removal of garbage heaps from residential areas, roadsides and villages surrounding the city. He also called for a proper and permanent system for garbage collection, transportation and scientific disposal. Vishal Sharma said that keeping Mohali clean is a collective responsibility of citizens and the administration, but the Municipal Corporation must ensure an efficient waste-management system so that residents can live in a clean and healthy environment.
