The recognition by one of the leading public research universities in the United States marks a significant milestone in the journey of a man whose roots are firmly connected to Chandigarh. He became Chandigarh’s first District Informatics Officer and played a pioneering role in establishing the NIC district office and introducing IT systems across government departments. His early work with government departments in Punjab and Chandigarh contributed to the development of technology-enabled governance in the region. Years later, that technology-driven vision evolved into a global business journey in the United States.
As CEO of 22nd Century Technologies, Sharma has built the company into a technology and professional services enterprise serving government and commercial organisations. In another major milestone, he led the acquisition of British Telecom Federal, the US Govt-contracting arm of the British Telecom Group. Born into a modest family and raised among six siblings, Sharma’s journey reflects the power of education, perseverance and ambition. From starting his career in Chandigarh’s public-sector technology ecosystem to leading a significant US acquisition and now having a university centre named after him, his story represents a remarkable journey from local roots to global impact.
The newly named Anil and Anupama Sharma Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will bring together students, faculty, entrepreneurs and business partners, fostering innovation, new ideas and entrepreneurial leadership. “Building a business taught me that success is never an individual achievement. People give you opportunities, believe in you and teach you, while communities create the circumstances for your growth. At some point, it becomes your responsibility to create those opportunities for others as well,” Sharma said.
