Dr Ashok Sharma Presents Advancements in Pediatric Corneal Transplants at World Cornea Congress, USA
Chandigarh 29 March ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Dr. Ashok Sharma, Director Dr. Ashok Sharma’s Cornea Centre, Chandigarh attended World Cornea Congress, held at Washington DC, USA, from 20th to 22nd March. Dr. Ashok Sharma presented his work on Pediatric Cornea Transplants. To perform corneal transplants in children specially in neonates and Infants (below 1 year of age) is extremely difficult. He has been performing Corneal Transplants in children for more than 30 years. In this meeting he shared his experience and presented results of corneal transplants done in 225 eyes. According to Dr. Ashok Sharma, although performing corneal transplants in children is difficult, good results can be obtained by regular follow up. Ophthalmologists need to be aware that even children born with corneal opacity since birth can also undergo corneal transplant surgery and enjoy good vision. Dr. Ashok Sharma has delivered a guest lecture in Bahrain on corneal transplant surgery in children and neonates. He has also got the best poster awarded on Corneal Transplant in children. Dr. Ashok Sharma’s efforts have given eye sight to many blind children and these children are pursuing a good life. One such case was of a 5-month-old girl, who was blind. She had microphthalmia, micro cornea and sclera-cornea. Dr. Ashok Sharma performed corneal transplant at the age of 5.5 mentioned in the right eye and at 8.5 month of age in the left eye. The child is 8 years old and going to school, leading a normal life. Dr. Ashok Sharma presented three posters - one comparing results of penetrating keratoplasty with Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) in children with advanced keratoconus. According to Dr. Ashok Sharma DALK is a safer technique for children. The second poster was on accelerated collagen crosslinking in keratoconus in children. This technique is safe and effective. This technique is also convenient to children as this takes shorter time than the standard one corneal child is able to co-operate. Dr. Rajan Sharma, co-author of all the posters, also presented a poster on Corneal Exosomes Cultures from umbilical Cord and human cornea stroma. Dr. Ashok Sharma is a pioneer corneal surgeon. He has performed a maximum number of corneal transplants in adults and in Children in this region.
