Questions Raised Over Chandigarh Municipal Corporation’s Financial Condition, Senior Deputy Mayor Jasvir Singh Bunty Demands Change in House Meeting Agenda
Chandigarh 28 April ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The upcoming General House Meeting of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is expected to be quite different this time. Senior Deputy Mayor Jasvir Singh Bunty has written an important letter to the Municipal Commissioner, requesting that instead of passing new agendas, the meeting should focus primarily on discussing the deteriorating financial condition of the Corporation. In his letter, Bunty mentioned that several proposals worth crores of rupees had been passed in previous House Meetings. However, due to the Corporation's current financial condition, tenders could not be issued for those projects. He further emphasized that if new high-value agendas are passed in the upcoming meeting as well, they would also prove futile because the Corporation simply does not have the required funds to execute them. The Senior Deputy Mayor clarified that although the Municipal Corporation had received more funds this year compared to previous years, the entire amount was exhausted within just six months. As a result, all development works in the city have come to a halt, and even the jobs of employees who have been serving the Corporation for years are now under threat. Bunty warned that if the situation is not addressed urgently and the financial mismanagement within the Corporation is not thoroughly investigated, the day may not be far when the Municipal Corporation may face complete closure. He suggested that all councillors and officials should hold a special meeting to thoroughly review the Corporation’s expenditures, fund mismanagement, and operational inefficiencies. He stressed that future fund allocations must be handled transparently and with clear priorities to bring the Corporation’s financial health back on track. Jasvir Singh Bunty’s initiative has sparked a new debate within the Corporation. It remains to be seen what stance councillors and officials will take on this issue during the House Meeting scheduled for April 30, and whether any concrete steps will be taken to improve the Corporation’s deteriorating financial condition, or if the matter will be shelved like many others in the past.
