Giani Harpreet Singh stated that government negligence resulted in more damage than the natural disaster itself.
We will hold a public inquiry into the man-made flood, involving experts, and will share the report with the people of Punjab.
Chandigarh 31 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The revived President of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Giani Harpreet Singh, today dispatched five trucks of relief supplies from Sri Fatehgarh Sahib to flood-affected areas. The relief materials included fodder for animals, flour, pulses, and water. Yesterday, Giani Harpreet Singh visited the impacted regions to assess the damage firsthand. He described the floods as a result of government incompetence rather than just a natural disaster. Giani Harpreet Singh pointed out that Punjab suffered significant losses due to flooding a year ago, and he criticized the government for making only hollow statements in response. He noted that during that time, the government failed to strengthen a single embankment and did not make adequate arrangements to protect riverine areas from such disasters. He asserted that the government has prioritized serving Delhi over addressing the concerns of Punjab during its one-and-a-half-year tenure. If the government had taken its responsibilities seriously, Punjab could have avoided substantial financial losses today. He characterized the current floods as both natural and artificial, attributing much of the damage to reckless and illegal mining along riverbanks, which he claims is conducted with governmental backing. He emphasized that the failure of floodgates and dams to withstand the water flow reveals a blatant level of government negligence. Giani Harpreet Singh called for an investigation into these artificial floods. He proposed that if the government does not act, he will form a committee of experts to conduct a public inquiry, with the findings made available to the public. He suggested that it would be preferable to establish a commission led by the Chief Justice of the High Court for a time-bound investigation into the losses of life and property and to identify the responsible parties. This commission should also ensure that illegal mining and other destructive practices in Punjab are halted. Criminal cases should be filed against those accountable, and compensation for damages should be provided. Senior leader Amarinder Singh Libra played a significant role in organizing the relief materials. Among those present at the event were Surjit Singh Rakhra, former minister, Karnail Singh Panjoli, Justice Nirmal Singh, former MMA, Lakhvir Singh Thabla, Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, Baltej Singh, Ranbir Singh Poonia, Darbara Singh Randhawa, Preet Singh Nagra, Swaran Singh Bath, Balwinder Singh Sohi, Harvinder Singh Babbal, Jaspal Singh Dadumajra, Gurdharam Singh, Gurdev Singh Happy Bhamarsi, Rajinder Singh Kharod, Karamjit Singh Dhillon, Surjit Singh Siti, Jai Singh Sirhind, and Sikander Singh Mandofal, among others.
