Shalby Hospital Mohali Launches Dedicated Polytrauma Team to Enhance Emergency Trauma Care in Tricity

Specialised multidisciplinary unit aims to improve survival and recovery during the critical ‘golden hour’

S.A.S.Nagar 30 December ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : With the Tricity region witnessing a steady rise in road traffic accidents, industrial injuries, and high-velocity trauma cases, Shalby Hospital, Mohali, has launched a dedicated Polytrauma Team to strengthen emergency trauma care and improve survival outcomes for critically injured patients. As a rapidly urbanising region with high vehicular density, national highways, industrial belts, and expanding residential hubs, the Chandigarh–Mohali–Panchkula belt reports thousands of trauma and accident cases every year, with road traffic accidents accounting for a significant proportion of emergency admissions. Medical experts note that timely intervention during the golden hour is often the single most critical factor in saving lives and preventing long-term disability.

The newly launched Polytrauma Team is a structured, multidisciplinary unit comprising specialists from emergency medicine, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, anaesthesia, critical care, radiology, and allied services, working together through well-defined protocols to ensure rapid assessment, parallel decision-making, and immediate intervention. The team was officially unveiled in the presence of the Chief Guest, Mr G Bhuvanesh Kumar, Senior Commandent, CASO ASG Chandigarh, senior hospital leadership, and core trauma specialists of the hospital.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Sandip Singh Rana, Director, CTVS, and former Professor and HOD, CTVS, PGIMER, Chandigarh, highlighted that trauma patients often present with multiple, complex injuries that cannot be managed in isolation. “Polytrauma care demands speed, coordination, and seamless communication across specialties — especially in a region like the Tricity where trauma load is consistently high,” he said.

Echoing this, Dr Pradeep Aggarwal, Chairman, Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Dr GS Natt, Director, Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Dr Robin Bohat, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement and Sports Medicine, Dr Pankaj Bhalla, Senior Consultant, General and Laparoscopic Surgery, Dr Manpreet Gill, Senior Consultant and HOD, Cardiac and General Anesthesia, Dr. Rakesh Redhu, Senior Consultant, Neurosurgery, Dr. Rajat Swami, Consultant and Head, ICU, Dr. Lovel Gupta, Head, Emergency, and Dr. Jasmine Kaur, Consultant, ENT & Head and Neck Surgery,  emphasised that a protocol-driven polytrauma model significantly reduces delays in diagnosis and treatment, which directly impacts survival rates and functional recovery.

Concluding the programme, the Chief Administrative Officer, Mr Gladwin Sandeep Nayyar,  said that the Polytrauma Team has been designed keeping the specific needs of the Tricity population in mind. “Our aim is to ensure that every severely injured patient receives fast, integrated, and expert care — from the moment they arrive at the emergency until definitive treatment and recovery,” the CAO said. With this launch, Shalby Hospital Mohali further strengthens its role as a key emergency care provider in the Tricity, offering 24×7 readiness, advanced infrastructure, and coordinated trauma management under one roof.
