Week-long AI Workshop for Teaching and Research Excellence Organised by IDC

Chandigarh 2 February ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A week-long intensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) workshop for teaching and research excellence that concluded today was organised online by the Chandigarh-based Institute for Development and Communication (IDC), an approved

research centre of Panjab University, Chandigarh. Expert sessions were delivered by faculty from Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University in the capital, bringing diverse institutional perspectives and national-level academic insights on AI in higher education.

The workshop was organised by Dr. Anuradha Sekhri, Associate Professor, Department of Education, IDC, Chandigarh, who also served as a resource person. A major strength of the workshop was its wide and diverse participation, with teachers from different states across India representing central and state universities, private universities, schools, and research scholars. This diversity fostered dialogue, peer learning, and cross-institutional exchange on the opportunities and challenges of AI integration in academics.

The workshop was conceptualised to enable educators and researchers to engage with AI in a manner that is ethical, transparent, and aligned with national academic values. Adopting a learning-by-doing pedagogy, the workshop enabled participants to gain

hands-on experience with AI tools for teaching, research, assessment, academic writing, content creation, and productivity. Key themes included AI ethics, academic integrity, transparency, plagiarism scenarios in the Indian context, data privacy, bias, and responsible AI use in accordance with

UGC regulations and NITI Aayog principles. The sessions emphasised that AI should function as an academic support system, complementing—rather than replacing—critical thinking and scholarly judgment. Dr. Chandan Awasthi, Deputy Director, IDC, Chandigarh, highlighted the importance of sustained capacity building and institutional responsibility in adopting AI for education.

Dr. Pramod Kumar, Chairperson of IDC, stressed that it was high time the scope of AI in research and education be highlighted. “As educators, we need to keep our minds open to newer technologies that can play an instrumental role in the dissemination of education and research.”
