Anti-drug awareness campaign to start from Ludhiana
Chandigarh 23 March ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : In a significant move against drug abuse in Punjab, the Akhil Bharatiya Gurjar Mahasabha has announced active participation through a statewide awareness campaign. The organization will launch “Nasha Mukti Yatras” (anti-drug awareness marches) to educate youth about the dangers of substance abuse, beginning from Ludhiana and expanding to villages across the state. The decision was taken during the Punjab executive meeting held in Chandigarh, which was attended by National Organization Secretary Bachchu Singh Bainsla as a special guest. During the meeting, Kamaldev Chauhan was unanimously appointed as the State President of the Punjab unit and entrusted with leading the campaign. Alignment with Governor’s Initiative
After assuming charge, Kamaldev Chauhan emphasized that the primary objective of the Gurjar community is to protect youth from the harmful effects of drugs and guide them toward a positive future. He noted that Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has been actively leading “Nasha Mukt Punjab” padyatras across border districts and other parts of the state. Chauhan announced that the Gurjar community will actively support and align with the Governor’s initiative. The organization has already finalized the campaign framework and preparations, and detailed information regarding the upcoming yatras has been shared with the Governor’s office. He stressed that eliminating drug abuse must be the top priority if Punjab is to return to a path of growth and development.Alongside social awareness, the Gurjar community has also signaled its political intent. Leaders of the Mahasabha claimed that the Gurjar population constitutes nearly 9% of Punjab’s electorate, positioning it as a significant vote bank ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The State President stated that community leaders and workers will now mobilize at the grassroots level, reaching out to villages to unite people. At the time of elections, the organization will openly declare its support for a political party or candidate from public platforms. The Mahasabha believes that a drug-free youth population is essential for true self-reliance and will play a crucial role in both the social and economic development of Punjab.
