Heat Intensifies in Punjab: Heatwave Alert Issued Starting Tomorrow; Mercury Expected to Rise by Up to 5 Degrees
Chandigarh 18 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for specific pockets within five districts of Punjab for Monday. These districts include Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Bathinda, and Mansa. On Tuesday, a heatwave alert remains in effect for 10 districts: Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, and Sangrur. Starting Wednesday, the heatwave is expected to engulf the entire state of Punjab.
On Sunday, an increase of 1.2 degrees was recorded in Punjab's overall temperature. Currently, it remains close to the normal range. Bathinda emerged as the hottest city in Punjab, recording a maximum temperature of 43.1 degrees. An increase of 0.4 degrees was also recorded in the minimum temperatures across Punjab; this figure now stands 1.6 degrees above the normal level. Rupnagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature, at 12.9 degrees. Maximum temperatures recorded across the state were as follows: Amritsar at 39.9 degrees, Ludhiana at 41.6 degrees, Patiala at 42.0 degrees, Pathankot at 40.6 degrees, Fazilka at 39.5 degrees, Faridkot at 41.9 degrees, and Rupnagar at 39.2 degrees. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature was recorded at 24.2 degrees in Amritsar, 24.2 degrees in Ludhiana, 25.8 degrees in Patiala, 24.2 degrees in Pathankot, 26.6 degrees in Bathinda, 25.7 degrees in Ferozepur, and 19.8 degrees in Hoshiarpur.
The monsoon is expected to arrive in Punjab between June 22 and 25. Surinder Pal, Director of the Meteorological Department's Chandigarh center, stated that if conditions remain favorable, the monsoon could enter Punjab between June 22 and 25. He further noted that, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall in Punjab is projected to be below normal this year. According to experts, this could lead to increased reliance on tube wells and other alternatives for irrigation.
The summer heat has begun to intensify. On Sunday, Chandigarh's maximum temperature was recorded at 40.3 degrees Celsius—1.4 degrees higher than normal. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for intense sunshine and heatwave conditions in the city over the coming days. According to Surinder Pal, Director of the Meteorological Department, the weather in Chandigarh is expected to remain clear for the next five days, with no possibility of rain. The mercury is now set to climb as high as 42 degrees. From May 18 to May 21, the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 41 degrees, potentially rising to 42 degrees Celsius on May 22. The minimum temperature is projected to range between 25 and 26 degrees Celsius, ensuring that nights remain warm. He added that a heatwave alert has been issued for various parts of Chandigarh for the next seven days. Much like the past 24 hours, the weather across the entire region is expected to remain completely dry in the days ahead.
