BJP Sends Tarun Chugh to Rajya Sabha; Journey from Booth In-charge to Parliament Becomes an Inspiration for Party Workers
S.A.S.Nagar 4 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Bharatiya Janata Party's decision to nominate National General Secretary Tarun Chugh as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha is being hailed as a major achievement by BJP workers. As one of the select few leaders within the party to rise from the ranks of an organizational worker to the national leadership, Tarun Chugh's political journey is regarded as a prime example of the BJP's worker-centric politics.
Tarun Chugh, who began his public life during his student days as a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and later as a BJP booth in-charge—hailing from the Shakti Nagar branch in the Namak Mandi area of Amritsar—carved a niche for himself at the national level while fulfilling various responsibilities across the *Mandal* (block), district, and state tiers of the organization. According to party sources, his unwavering commitment to the organization, his constant engagement with party workers, and the pivotal role he played in expanding the party's organizational footprint across various states earned him the deep trust of the BJP leadership.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then-National President Amit Shah, he was appointed as a National Secretary of the BJP; subsequently, under the chairmanship of Jagat Prakash Nadda, he was elevated to the position of National General Secretary. Following these appointments, he played a crucial role over a period of 12 years in strengthening the party's organizational structure across several states and Union Territories, including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Political analysts believe that his candidacy for the Rajya Sabha reinforces the BJP's distinctive model—one in which leaders who have dedicated themselves to the organization selflessly and over a long period are entrusted with significant responsibilities, often without having to seek them out. As a leader hailing from Punjab, Tarun Chugh's presence in the Rajya Sabha is expected to be instrumental in raising issues pertinent to the state on the national stage with greater effectiveness.
Across the country, numerous BJP leaders and workers have enthusiastically welcomed this decision, viewing it as a fitting tribute to the dedicated workers who toil at the grassroots level. They assert that Tarun Chugh's appointment sends a clear message: that within the BJP, immense value is placed on dedication to the organization, hard work, and sustained active engagement. There is also speculation within political circles that, upon entering the Rajya Sabha, Tarun Chugh is likely to prominently raise issues concerning Punjab—specifically those related to development, security, border regions, industry, and the youth. The party leadership is confident that his extensive organizational experience will prove instrumental in enabling him to play an effective role within Parliament as well.
The BJP's decision to send Tarun Chugh to the Rajya Sabha marks not only a significant milestone in his personal political journey but is also being viewed as a manifestation of the organization's 'worker-centric' ethos—a philosophy that has propelled him from the booth level to the very epicenter of national politics. BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh has been a volunteer since his childhood; furthermore, his family has maintained ties with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for three generations. He joined the Vidyarthi Parishad in 1997, became a Booth In-charge in 1989, and was appointed President of the District Yuva Morcha unit in 1993.
Tarun Chugh shouldered the responsibility of President of the Punjab BJP Yuva Morcha in 1997. Subsequently, he served as District BJP Vice President in 2003, State BJP Secretary in 2008, and State General Secretary in 2012. His journey took him to Delhi in 2014 as a National Secretary of the party, followed by his elevation to National General Secretary in 2020; and now, in 2026, while continuing to serve as the party's National General Secretary, Tarun Chugh has embarked on his journey to the Rajya Sabha.
