Broken Roads of Manimajra Expose Smart City Claims; Administration Shouldn't Wait for a Mishap to Happen: Rajbir Singh Bharti
Miserable Condition of Manimajra Roads Plagues Public; Heavy Resentment Among Traders and Local Residents
Chandigarh/Manimajra 10 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : While Chandigarh is recognized nationwide as a "Smart City" and "The Beautiful City," the deplorable condition of roads in Manimajra's Ward No. 5 is raising serious question marks over this identity. Major roads in the ward—including the Motor Market road, the Manimajra Main Market road, the road leading towards Fun Republic, and the stretch from Shivalik Garden Chowk via Samadhi Gate to the market—are completely broken, causing severe inconvenience and posing a continuous hazard to the general public. Rajbir Singh Bharti, Senior Vice President of the Manimajra EWS Residents Welfare Association, stated that a pipeline was laid on the road from Shivalik Garden Chowk to Samadhi Gate under the 24x7 Water Supply Smart City Pilot Project in 2024. This project was inaugurated by the Honorable Union Home Minister of India. Keeping the inauguration event in mind, the road was repaired in a hasty manner, without being properly restored according to technical standards after the pipeline installation.
He added that, unfortunately, this water supply project failed to deliver the expected results and has now proven to be a failure, which is currently under a vigilance inquiry. Alongside this, the condition of the road beneath which the pipeline was laid has deteriorated severely at several places. Potholes, caved-in sections, uprooted coal tar, and scattered gravel/grit are posing a constant threat to commuters. Rajbir Singh Bharti emphasized that hundreds of vehicles, two-wheelers, e-rickshaw drivers, traders, customers, and local residents pass through these roads daily. Due to the poor condition of the roads, a major accident could occur at any time. Two-wheeler riders and electric three-wheeler (e-rickshaw) drivers are particularly at the highest risk of accidents. He further mentioned that the Motor Market is a vital commercial hub of Chandigarh, where thousands of people arrive daily for business and shopping. The broken roads are not only adversely affecting business but are also tarnishing the city's image. Visitors coming from outside question the tall claims of the "Smart City" when they witness these dilapidated roads.
He has demanded that the Chandigarh Administration, Municipal Corporation, and concerned departments conduct an immediate technical survey of all these roads and undertake high-quality repair and reconstruction work, rather than waiting for an untoward incident to happen. Additionally, he urged a review of the actual status of the 24x7 water supply project to ensure the proper utilization of public funds. He concluded by saying that Manimajra is a prominent commercial and residential area of Chandigarh, and its wretched roads are a blot on the image of the Smart City. The administration must take prompt action, keeping public safety and the city's reputation in mind.
