Chandigarh Chief Secretary Assures Full Support to Achieve Beggar-Free City by November 1
Chief Secretary Appreciates Dr. Karm Chand’s Literary Work “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”
Chandigarh 12 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A workshop was organized at the PHD Chamber, Sector 31, by Umeed Sanstha and its partner organizations with the support of the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD). The workshop, chaired by Chandigarh Administration Chief Secretary Rajesh Prasad, focused on developing a transformative model to bring children who survive by begging outside temples and at traffic intersections into the mainstream of society. Prasad assured full support from the Chandigarh Administration in helping these organizations achieve their goal of making Chandigarh completely beggar-free by November 1, 2026.
He also praised “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” a literary work by Dr. Karm Chand, a retired Principal from Senior Secondary School, Ghared, Nalagarh Sub-Division. He said the book challenges social evils and harmful practices while promoting love, harmony, and goodwill among people. Highlighting the achievements of Umeed Sanstha, Prasad stated that the organization has connected 49 children with education and helped 15 individuals secure employment, enabling them to live with dignity and self-respect. He further noted that the Arvind Mehta Memorial Trust has been actively supporting Umeed Sanstha and that Dr. Karm Chand, an active member of the Trust, has been raising awareness against social evils and inequalities through his writings.
Referring to “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” Prasad said the work promotes brotherhood, cooperation, non-violence, and peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and mutual understanding. It encourages society to stay away from war and reminds people that negative thinking against humanity is a curse upon mankind. The Chief Secretary emphasized that environmental conservation is a collective responsibility, as nature is composed of the five elements from which human life itself originates. He added that the Chandigarh Administration is making determined efforts to keep the City Beautiful neat, clean, and green, and that public participation is essential for achieving this goal. On the occasion, Dr. Karm Chand presented copies of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” to the dignitaries on the dais. The Chief Guest described the book as a valuable contribution that offers solutions to many of the challenges facing the world today.
