Failure to Convene House Meeting Affects Chandigarh's Development; Mayor Must Answer: Jasbir Singh Bunty
Chandigarh 13 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Former Senior Deputy Mayor and Councilor of Ward No. 24, Jasbir Singh Bunty, expressed serious concern over the failure to convene a Chandigarh Municipal Corporation House meeting since April 2026. He stated that this has hampered numerous important development projects and left several issues concerning the public interest pending.
Jasbir Singh Bunty remarked that the Municipal Corporation's House meeting is the cornerstone of the democratic system, serving as the forum where decisions regarding city development, basic amenities, and public interest proposals are deliberated. However, the absence of House meetings for several months has stalled various projects and development works awaiting approval, directly impacting the city's residents.
He described the recent statement made by Mayor Saurabh Joshi in Rishikesh—"In Chandigarh, the peon is more powerful than the Mayor"—as extremely unfortunate and alarming. If the Mayor feels so powerless that he cannot effectively exercise his authority, he should clarify the situation to the public. If he is unable to discharge his duties, he should reconsider his position on moral grounds.
Bunty noted that while a lack of financial resources was often cited in the past as the reason for delays in development work, the Municipal Corporation currently possesses adequate funds. Despite this, the stalling of development projects due to the failure to call a House meeting reflects administrative failure.
He urged Chandigarh Administrator Shri Gulab Chand Kataria to prioritize the city's development and public interest by immediately convening a Municipal Corporation House meeting. This would allow pending proposals to be approved and stalled development works to gain momentum. Jasbir Singh Bunty emphasized that the primary objective of the Municipal Corporation is to provide better amenities to citizens and ensure the city's development. It is unfortunate that development work is being hampered by political and administrative reasons in the current scenario. He demanded that the administration intervene immediately and take necessary steps to address this issue.
