Former Senior Deputy Mayor and Councilor Jasbir Singh Bunty Protests Over Dilapidated Roads in Village Itawa and Sector-42
Chandigarh 16 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Former Senior Deputy Mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and Councilor Jasbir Singh Bunty staged a protest today alongside local shopkeepers and area residents regarding the deplorable condition of the main road outside Village Itawa. During the protest, he demanded the immediate construction of the road by the Municipal Corporation administration and expressed deep displeasure over the road's condition. Jasbir Singh Bunty questioned why excuses regarding a lack of funds and resources are being made for roads under the Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction when the Chandigarh Administration is able to regularly construct and repair roads under its control with an adequate budget. He stated that the city's residents want to know why the Municipal Corporation is unable to secure sufficient funds for road construction.
He noted that several roads in Village Itawa and Sector-42 have been in a dilapidated state for a long time, causing immense hardship to local residents. Accidents occur frequently due to large potholes on the roads; many motorists and pedestrians have been injured, and children have even suffered broken limbs after falling. Despite this, the Municipal Corporation has taken no concrete steps toward road construction or repair. Questioning the Mayor and the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, he demanded a clarification on when these crucial roads in the ward would be constructed. He asked why the public is being deprived of basic amenities despite regularly paying house tax and other levies.
The former Senior Deputy Mayor remarked that while the Municipal Corporation collects crores of rupees in taxes from residents, frustration is bound to arise if roads, sanitation, parks, and other basic amenities are not maintained. He alleged that city development works have stalled despite the receipt of grants and funds from various sources. Jasbir Singh Bunty stated that the current leadership of the Municipal Corporation has proven to be a complete failure in advancing development works. Neither are meetings being held regularly, nor are crucial decisions regarding the city's development being taken on time.
He noted that municipal elections are approaching, and residents of the city and the ward are constantly asking when development work will actually begin and what the roadmap for the city's progress is. The public wants to know when the dilapidated roads in Village Etawah and Sector-42 will be constructed, when the sanitation system will improve, when park maintenance will be upgraded, and when issues related to other basic amenities will be resolved.
He stated that development is proven not merely by announcements, but by work visible on the ground. If people are not receiving basic amenities on time, it is entirely justified for them to demand answers. The municipal administration and the current leadership must clearly articulate their plans for the development of the city and its wards, as well as the timeline for completing pending development projects. Jasbir Singh Banti demanded the immediate commencement of construction work on the dilapidated roads in Village Etawah and Sector-42 to provide relief to the residents and effectively prevent accidents. He asserted that development, accountability, and public amenities would be the key issues in the upcoming municipal elections.
