Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) Demands Crop Diversification with MSP and Year‑round MGNREGA Work for Labourers
Party demanded for an impartial investigation into the 1984 genocide and that the responsible persons be given appropriate punishment.
Leaders also called for revocation of Indira Gandhi’s Bharat Ratna.
Memorandum addressed to the Governor of Punjab were also submitted to the Deputy Commissioners in the remaining eleven districts.
Chandigarh 2 June( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) initiated a public campaign to submit memoranda to the Governor of Punjab through the Deputy Commissioners of various districts. Under this programme, memoranda were submitted today in the remaining eleven districts. These memoranda raise issues that have, for decades, wounded Punjab’s psyche, weakened its economy, and eroded the trust of the Panth and the people of Punjab, especially the youth. The ten‑point charter of demands includes:
- Amendments to the flawed sacrilege law passed in haste.
- Immediate conduct of SGPC elections, which have not been held for 14 years.
- Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops for farmers, and year‑round work under MGNREGA to improve the economic condition of labourers.
- The issue of river waters being supplied to neighbouring states for six decades without compensation.
- Release of Bandi Sikhs who have already served their sentences.
- Investigation into the June 1984 genocide, punishment of those responsible, and revocation of Indira Gandhi’s Bharat Ratna.
- Reopening of the closed Sri Kartarpur Sahib corridor.
In Ludhiana district, the memorandum was submitted by senior leaders Santa Singh Umaidpuri, Bharpoor Singh Dhandra and Jaswant Singh Purain, along with several district‑level leaders and workers. In Jalandhar, the memorandum was submitted by Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Bibi Harjeet Kaur Talwandi and Jagjit Singh Gaba, together with the entire district leadership. In Amritsar, senior leader Ajaipal Singh Mirankot, District President Daljinderbir Singh Virk and Maninder Singh Dhunna, along with a large number of leaders and workers, submitted the memorandum. In Pathankot district, Sucha Singh Chhotepur, along with District President Hari Singh Purewal and Manjeet Singh Ranipur, accompanied by all district leaders and a large number of workers, submitted the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Pathankot. In Fatehgarh Sahib, the delegation was led by District President Mandeep Singh Tarkhan Majra, together with senior leader Justice Nirmal Singh, Ranbir Singh Poonian and Gurjeet Singh Talwandi, as well as all district and circle presidents. In Ropar, the delegation was led by District President Gurmeet Makrauna, along with Sukhwinder Singh Mundian, Harbans Singh Kandhola and Harjinder Singh Jindi, with the entire district organisation present. In Hoshiarpur, under the leadership of District President Manjeet Singh Dasuha, all district leaders and workers submitted the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Hoshiarpu Heera Singh and Narinder Singh in attendance.
The leaders of Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) stated that Punjab hopes the Governor will not only consider these demands sympathetically but also forward the charter to the Hon’ble President of India and the Union Home Ministry for resolution. The districts where memorandums were submitted today include Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana, Ropar, Nawanshahr, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Moga. The memorandum also warned that if these demands are not considered sympathetically and the wounds of the Panth and Punjab are not healed, a strong struggle will be launched with the support of the Sangat to get these demands fulfilled, so that long‑pending issues can be resolved.
