Heartfelt Thanks to the People of Punjab for Supporting the ‘Punjab Bandh’ for the Release of Bandi Singhs Despite Facing Difficulties : Giani Harpreet Singh
Chandigarh 21 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : President of Shiromani Akali Dal Punar Surjit, Giani Harpreet Singh, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people of Punjab who, despite facing inconvenience and difficulties, extended their full support to the Punjab Bandh called in support of the release of the Bandi Singhs (Sikh prisoners). By closing educational institutions, businesses, and other private establishments across Punjab, the people of Punjab demonstrated their solidarity with this legitimate demand and made it clear that they would not allow governments to violate human rights. Giani Harpreet Singh said that when governments, instead of listening to the voice of ordinary people, attempt to suppress it through the use of force, calling for a Punjab Bandh becomes the last resort.
He said that the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha had organized a march on August 15 to approach the Governor of Punjab and present its demands. However, instead of listening to the legitimate concerns of thousands of people, the administration used tear gas and water cannons against the protesters and subsequently registered cases against them. It was against this backdrop that the call for the Punjab Bandh was given, which received full support from all sections of society across Punjab without any complaints. Giani Harpreet Singh warned the governments that they should understand the message conveyed by this response: people are willing to bear personal and economic losses in order to oppose injustice. He therefore urged the governments to take the path of justice at the earliest and immediately release the Bandi Singhs.
