A New Benchmark for Inclusive Cinema : ‘Rabb Di Awaaz’

A New Benchmark for Inclusive Cinema : ‘Rabb Di Awaaz’

Chandigarh 19 March ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Rabb Di Awaaz has emerged as a pioneering force in inclusive Indian cinema, setting a remarkable benchmark even before official accessibility guidelines came into effect. While the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting mandated features like audio description, subtitles, and sign language interpretation in 2026, this Chandigarh-produced film had already embraced these principles upon its release in December 2023.

Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ojaswwee Sharma, the film broke new ground by securing censor certification in multiple accessible formats—general, audio description, and sign language—making it a first in Indian cinema. Beyond technical accessibility, the film championed true inclusivity by casting actors with visual impairment in lead roles, incorporating deaf signers, and featuring individuals with disabilities such as cerebral palsy and autism.

The film’s impact extended beyond storytelling. It received the Special Jury Award at the We Care Film Festival in 2025 and inspired policy-level discussions, with Sharma later invited by the CBFC to guide filmmakers on accessibility. With over 275 free screenings across India and international festivals, Rabb Di Awaaz has demonstrated that accessibility is not an obligation but an opportunity—expanding cinema’s reach and reinforcing its role as a truly universal medium.
