Fortis Doctors Share How They Tackle Stress and Prioritize Mental Health

S.A.S.Nagar 29 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : As we celebrate Doctors’ Day on July 1, senior specialists from Fortis Hospital Mohali shed light on a vital yet often overlooked aspect of a doctor’s life—their own mental well-being. Dr Atul Joshi, Director, General Surgery, Laparoscopic and Oncology Surgeon, Fortis Hospital Mohali, said, “Endless working hours, strong work ethic, 24x7 availability for patients, a hugely understanding wife and a dedicated team have all contributed to my 17-year stint at Fortis Hospital Mohali. For me, conducting a surgery has never been ‘work’ in the strictest sense, but pure worship. Regular, short meditation sessions along with yoga do a world of magic. I also take off twice a year during which I render my services to underprivileged people at charitable medical camps across the country.” Dr. Hardeep Singh, Senior Consultant, Department of Mental Health, says that while doctors are trained to manage crises, the emotional and psychological toll can be immense. “Every life we touch leaves a mark on us. That’s why I consciously practice meditation and reading daily—it helps me process emotions and stay grounded.” He also enjoys listening to music in the evenings, which helps him unwind after intense clinical hours. Dr. Swapna Misra, Director, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, said, “Being a doctor is a privilege, but the pressure never really stops. I unwind through gardening and evening walks—my small but powerful acts of self-care.” Dr. Misra is also into adventure sports, which she goes for whenever she gets the time for a short break from her otherwise hectic routine. All three doctors stress that on Doctors’ Day, while gratitude is appreciated, what doctors need most is a supportive work environment, which they get in Fortis Hospital, Mohali, which they added, allows space for emotional healing, peer support, and mental health resources. “Doctors are human too,” they remind. “Taking care of ourselves isn’t selfish—it’s essential. A mentally strong doctor is the best gift we can offer our patients and ourselves.”
