House Listing and Housing Census Phase of Census 2027 Successfully Completed in Punjab
Chandigarh 14 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The House Listing and Housing Census (Phase-I) of the Census of India 2027 has been successfully completed across the State of Punjab during the notified period from 15th May 2026 to 13th June 2026. The Operation was carried out under the guidance of the Chief Secretary, Punjab, and with the support of the Department of Local Government, Punjab. During this phase, Enumerators visited allotted House Listing Blocks in all villages and urban wards across the State and collected information relating to the building, census house and household through a specially designed mobile application notified by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, New Delhi, Government of India, covering important aspects such as housing conditions, availability of household amenities and ownership of assets.
Apart from generating comprehensive data on housing conditions and household amenities, the House Listing Operation provides the essential framework for the subsequent Population Enumeration Phase-II of Census 2027, thereby ensuring complete coverage of all households and persons. The Phase-1 Operation was conducted throughout Punjab's 23 districts and 14 Municipal Corporations, for which Deputy Commissioners and Corporation Commissioners were appointed as Principal Census Officers. A total of 52,564 House Listing Blocks were created and assigned to Enumerators to facilitate systematic and efficient enumeration. In addition, sufficient numbers of Supervisors were appointed to ensure effective monitoring and quality control.For the successful execution of this nationwide exercise in Punjab, extensive administrative and field-level arrangements were made. The Census of India is conducted under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990, as amended from time to time. The previous Census was conducted in 2011. Census 2027 will be the 16th Census in India and the 8th Census since Independence.
On the successful completion of the House Listing and Housing Census phase, Dr. Navjot Khosa, IAS, the Chief Principal Census Officer & Director of Census Operations, Punjab, has expressed sincere gratitude to all residents of the State for their wholehearted cooperation and active participation in this nationally important exercise. Appreciation and congratulations are also extended to all Charge Officers, Trainers, Supervisors, Enumerators and other officers and staff whose dedication and hard work ensured the successful completion of Phase-I of Census 2027 in Punjab.
