Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjeet) submits memorandum to Governor of Punjab on pending Panthic, constitutional and agricultural issues

Chandigarh 14 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A senior delegation of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjeet) today met Hon’ble Governor of Punjab, Gulab Chand Kataria at Raj Bhavan, Chandigarh. The delegation submitted a detailed memorandum drawing the Governor’s urgent attention towards a range of critical issues concerning the Sikh Panth, Punjab’s constitutional and federal rights, farmers, labourers, and the state’s economy.

The memorandum demands comprehensive amendments to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026 after proper consultation with Sikh institutions. It calls upon the Government of India to formally apologise in Parliament for the 1984 genocide, to declare Indira Gandhi as the main culprit, and to rename Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji. The party has demanded exemplary punishment through fast-track courts for those guilty in the 2015 sacrilege cases, including Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim and his associates. It also seeks the immediate conduct of SGPC elections, which have been overdue since 2011, and the release of all eligible Bandi Singhs who have completed their sentences.

On the agricultural and economic front, the memorandum demands a comprehensive revival package including a complete farm debt waiver, statutory guarantee of MSP for diversified crops, and the opening of the Wagah border for agricultural and commercial trade. It seeks protection of labourers’ rights, debt waiver for landless workers, and restoration of MGNREGA funding on the 90:10 Centre-State pattern. The delegation also demanded the completion of the Punjabi Suba by including Punjabi-speaking areas left out in 1966, protection of Punjab’s rights over its river waters and hydroelectric projects, and the immediate reopening and uninterrupted operation of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor.

Further, the memorandum requests a special economic and industrial package for Punjab on par with other border states, along with a 50% reduction in VAT and excise duty on fuel to provide relief from inflation. It calls for the timely availability of fertilisers such as DAP and urea, and strict action against black marketing and forced bundling of products. Lastly, the party has reiterated the demand to grant Special Category Status to Punjab in recognition of its extraordinary contribution to national security, food security, and the Green Revolution.

The delegation included the following senior leaders: Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra (Former MP), Gurpartap Singh Wadala (Secretary General, SAD(PS) & Ex-MLA), Gobind Singh Longowal (Former MLA & Former President, SGPC), Sucha Singh Chhotepur (Former MLA & Former Cabinet Minister), Sarwan Singh Phillaur (Former Minister & Former MLA), Bibi Paramjit Kaur Gulshan (Former MP), Gaganjit Singh Barnala (Former MLA), Ajaypal Singh Meerakot (Former MLA), Ranjit Singh Chhajliwadi (Ex-MLA), Gurjit Singh Talwandi (General Secretary), Jagjit Singh Kohli (Office Secretary), and Ravinder Singh Shahpur.
