NRI Accused of Concealing Serious Illness Before Marriage, Cheating Bride’s Family of ₹7.3 Million

NRI Accused of Concealing Serious Illness Before Marriage, Cheating Bride’s Family of ₹7.3 Million

Family Seeks Impartial Probe by Punjab Governor, Chief Minister and Statutory Commissions

Chandigarh 20 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal) : A Punjab-based family has accused an NRI groom and his family of fraudulently concealing a serious medical condition before marriage, alleging that the deception resulted in financial losses of nearly ₹7.3 million (₹73 lakh). The complainant has sought an impartial investigation from the Punjab Governor, Chief Minister, Punjab State Human Rights Commission and Punjab State Women Commission. Daljit Kaur, a resident of Tanda Ramsahai village in Mukerian, Hoshiarpur district, alleged that her daughter, Ramandeep Kaur, was married to Arundeep Singh of Begowal in Kapurthala district on January 14 this year. According to the complaint, the groom and his family deliberately concealed the fact that he had been suffering from a serious brain tumour and had a history of epileptic seizures before the marriage.

The complainant alleged that the family later discovered that the groom had undergone a major brain surgery in 2021 and another operation in 2025. She claimed that despite doctors being aware of the seriousness of his condition, this information was never disclosed to the bride’s family before the marriage. According to the complaint, the bride’s family spent nearly ₹73 lakh on the wedding, including around 11 tolas of gold, a Mahindra Thar vehicle worth approximately ₹23 lakh, cash gifts of ₹6–7 lakh, and other marriage expenses. The complainant stated that they possess video recordings of the gold exchange, wedding footage and other documents as evidence. She further alleged that the groom’s entire family was aware of his medical condition but intentionally suppressed the information to facilitate the marriage.

Women Commission’s Directions Allegedly Ignored

Daljit Kaur further alleged that the Punjab State Women Commission had summoned the groom’s family during the proceedings, but they reportedly failed to appear, citing a road accident. According to the complaint, the Commission had also directed appropriate legal action regarding the passport of the accused to prevent any interference with the investigation. However, she claimed that no effective action has been taken so far.

Questions Raised Over Police Action

The complainant has also questioned the role of the Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala police, alleging that despite approaching senior police officials, no concrete legal action has been initiated. She claimed that the matter has been repeatedly transferred from one office to another, delaying justice.

Demand for High-Level Investigation

In her representation to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the complainant has sought an independent and time-bound investigation into the allegations. She has requested strict compliance with the Women Commission’s directions, an inquiry into the role of the local police, and appropriate legal measures to prevent the accused from leaving the country during the investigation. She has also appealed for justice, protection and legal assistance for her daughter and the family. The allegations contained in the complaint are those of the complainant. The accused persons’ response was not available at the time of filing this report, and the matter is subject to investigation.
