Forest workers, enraged over not receiving salaries for 5 months, staged a protest march in Patiala city. Announcement of protest in Dirba constituency of the Finance Minister of Punjab on August 18 Patiala/Chandigarh 14 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A massive protest was held in front of the DFO Patiala office under the chairmanship of Jaswinder Singh Sauja, Sher Singh Sirhind, Jagtar Singh Sahpur, Bhupinder Singh Sadhoheri and Joga Singh Wajidpur, President of Forest Workers Union Punjab District Patiala. Central University of Punjab Celebrates National Librarian’s Day to Honour Legacy of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan

Bathinda 14 August ( PDL ) : The Department of Library and Information Sciences at the Central University of Punjab celebrated *National Librarian’s Day* to commemorate the 134th birth anniversary of *Dr. S. R. Ranganathan*, the pioneer of library science in India. The event brought together faculty members, library professionals and students to reflect on Dr. Ranganathan’s enduring legacy and discuss the evolving role of libraries in the digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) era.

The programme commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp, followed by floral tributes to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Bhaw Nath Pandey, Head, Department of Library and Information Sciences and Dean, School of Information and Communication Studies, highlighted the significance of National Librarian’s Day and Dr. Ranganathan’s lasting contributions to the field of library and information science. He particularly focused on the Five Laws of Library Science and other pioneering contributions of Padma Shri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, which continue to guide the development of library services and practices. He also emphasised the need for libraries to evolve with changing technologies and remain relevant in the rapidly transforming information landscape.

Prof. Mahendra Kumar addressed the gathering on the importance of professional pride and commitment, noting that collective effort is essential for enhancing the status of the field. Dr. Sudeep Sharma, University Librarian, elaborated on the various facilities and resources available at the University Library and encouraged scholars and students to make effective use of these resources to support their academic and research activities. Dr. Bhupinder Singh, Deputy Librarian, spoke about the responsibilities of library professionals and emphasised the importance of keeping pace with emerging technologies, changing user expectations and evolving information needs.

Faculty members from Department of Library and Information Sciences also shared their perspectives on the changing information landscape and the emerging role of technology in libraries. Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Somesh Rai, Dr. Florence Guite and Dr. Rishabh Shrivastava highlighted the need for library professionals and students to develop technological skills and adapt to emerging tools and technologies to strengthen library services in the AI era. The celebration concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening libraries as dynamic, technology-enabled centres of learning, knowledge and research, while exploring innovative ways to make library services more accessible, user-oriented and relevant in the Artificial Intelligence era.
